Josephine Aloyse Dolan (1913-2004) was an important historian and teacher. She was the first full-time professor of nursing at the University of Connecticut's School of Nursing. Besides teaching, Dolan was a historian who gathered many old nursing items. These included documents, special objects, and other interesting pieces.

In 1996, she gave all these items to the School of Nursing. This created the Dolan Collection of Nursing History. After she passed away, her friend and fellow nurse, Eleanor Krohn Herrmann, helped take care of the collection. Eleanor died in 2012.

Josephine Dolan's Education

Josephine Dolan worked hard to become a nurse and educator. She earned her nursing diploma in 1935 from St. John's Hospital in Lowell, Massachusetts. Later, she continued her studies at Boston University. She received her bachelor's degree in nursing in 1942. Then, she earned her master's degree in 1950.

Honorary Degrees and Recognition

Dolan also received special honors for her work. She was given honorary doctoral degrees. One was from Rhode Island College in 1974. Another was from Boston College in 1987. These degrees recognized her great contributions to nursing.

Contributions to Nursing

Josephine Dolan was very active in the nursing community. She served on the board of directors for several important groups. One of these was the National League for Nursing. This organization helps improve nursing education and practice.

Awards and Achievements

Dolan received many awards for her dedication. In 1972, she earned the National League for Nursing's first Distinguished Service Award. This award recognized her outstanding work. In 2012, she was honored by being added to the American Nurses Association Hall of Fame. This is a very high honor for nurses.

The Connecticut Nurses Association created an award in her name. Since 1980, they have given out the Josephine A. Dolan Award. This award celebrates nurses who have made great contributions to nursing education.

Author and Historian

Josephine Dolan also wrote an important textbook. It was called Nursing in Society: A Historical Perspective. This book helped many students learn about the history of nursing. Her work as a historian helped preserve the past of nursing for future generations.
