Josephine Pollard (October 10, 1834 – August 15, 1892) was an American writer, poet, and a very talented hymn writer. She was known for writing many popular books for children. She also wrote over one hundred Christian hymns.
Josephine Pollard worked as an editor for the Sunday School Times. She also worked for the Methodist Book Concern. There, she edited a magazine for African Americans. She wrote for other children's magazines too, like The Little Corporal. Her poems appeared in famous magazines such as Harper's Magazine and Scribner's Magazine. Some of her children's poems were put together in a book called Elfin land in 1882.
Josephine Pollard wrote in a way that was easy for kids to understand. She didn't talk down to them or use words that were too difficult. Her books are popular again today, especially for kids learning to read at home.
Early Life and Education
Josephine Pollard was born in New York City on October 10, 1834. She was one of seven children. Her father, Calvin Pollard, was an architect. She went to an exclusive girls' school called the Springler Institute.
Pollard was a member of the Presbyterian Church her whole life. She went to the North Presbyterian Church in New York City. She also helped start a club for professional women called Sorosis. Josephine Pollard never married. She passed away in New York City on August 15, 1892, after being sick for a long time.
