Joshua Dominique Powell (born January 25, 1983) is an American former professional basketball player and coach. He played as a power forward or center. Powell is famous for winning two NBA championships with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2009 and 2010. He also played for other NBA teams like the Dallas Mavericks and Atlanta Hawks. Outside the U.S., he played in many countries, including Russia, Italy, and Australia. In 2013, he helped Olympiacos win the EuroLeague championship.

College Basketball Journey

Josh Powell played college basketball at North Carolina State for two years. In his first year, he scored about 7.2 points and grabbed 3.9 rebounds per game. This earned him a spot on the ACC All-Rookie team.

Sophomore Season Highlights

During his second year, Powell improved a lot. He averaged 12.4 points and 5.3 rebounds in 31 games. He was even named the team's most improved player. He was also good at blocking shots, ranking seventh in the ACC. In the ACC Tournament, he scored 20 points and grabbed 7 rebounds per game. He even scored a career-high 26 points in the championship game against Duke.

Professional Basketball Career

After college, Josh Powell started his professional basketball career. He played for many teams both in the United States and around the world.

Starting Out in Europe and the WBA

Josh Powell was not chosen in the 2003 NBA draft. He first played for the Dallas Mavericks during the preseason. Then, he moved to Russia to play for Lokomotiv-Rostov. After that, he joined Scafati Basket in Italy. He later returned to the U.S. and helped the Southern Crescent Lightning win the 2004 WBA championship. He also played another season in Italy for JuveCaserta Basket.

Playing for the Dallas Mavericks

In August 2005, Powell joined the Dallas Mavericks again. He played in 16 games during the first half of the 2005–06 season. He also spent some time with the Fort Worth Flyers in the NBA Development League. On April 4, 2006, he scored 12 points against the Sacramento Kings. The Mavericks made it to the NBA Finals that year. They lost to the Miami Heat, but Powell played in six playoff games.

Time with the Pacers and Warriors

In July 2006, Powell was traded to the Indiana Pacers. He played only seven games for them. In January 2007, he was traded again to the Golden State Warriors. In his second game with the Warriors, he scored 13 points. He played in 30 regular season games and four playoff games for the Warriors.

Joining the Los Angeles Clippers

Josh Powell signed with the Los Angeles Clippers in August 2007. He had some great games with them. On April 3, 2008, he grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds. Three days later, he scored a career-high 22 points against the Houston Rockets. He was waived by the Clippers in July 2008.

Winning Championships with the Lakers

On August 14, 2008, Powell joined the Los Angeles Lakers. This was a very successful time for him. Over two seasons with the Lakers, he helped the team win two NBA championships. These wins happened in 2009 and 2010.

Later NBA and International Career

After his time with the Lakers, Powell signed with the Atlanta Hawks in 2010. He then played for teams in many different countries.

Playing in China, Switzerland, and Puerto Rico

In 2011, Powell played for the Liaoning Flying Leopards in China. After that, he played a game for Union Neuchâtel Basket in Switzerland. In March 2012, he joined the Brujos de Guayama team in Puerto Rico.

Brief Stints with NBA Teams

Powell signed with the San Antonio Spurs for training camp in 2012 but was later waived. In 2013, he signed with the New York Knicks for training camp, but he was also waived before the season started.

Success with Olympiacos

In November 2012, Powell signed with the Greek team Olympiacos. He helped them win the 2012–13 EuroLeague championship. This was another big win in his career.

More International Play and Coaching

After Greece, Powell played for the Guangdong Southern Tigers in China. He also played for Barangay Ginebra San Miguel in the Philippines. In 2014, he briefly returned to the Houston Rockets. After being waived, he became a player development coach for the Rockets for a season. He also played in Argentina for San Lorenzo de Almagro and again in Puerto Rico for Indios de Mayagüez. In 2016, he played for Luoyang Zhonghe in China.

Time with the Sydney Kings

In October 2016, Powell joined the Sydney Kings in Australia. He played 27 games for the Kings. He averaged 9.4 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. He scored a season-high 21 points in a game against Illawarra.

Final Years in Venezuela and Korea

In 2017, Powell played for Trotamundos de Carabobo in Venezuela. Later that year, he joined the Changwon LG Sakers in the Korean Basketball League. He played nine games before leaving the team in November 2017.
