Joshua Alexander Reaves, born on June 4, 1997, is a professional basketball player. He is from both Bolivia and America. He currently plays for the Rio Grande Valley Vipers in the NBA G League. Before becoming a pro, he played college basketball for the Penn State Nittany Lions.

Growing Up and High School Basketball

Josh Reaves grew up in Fairfax, Virginia. His mother, Liset Bravo Reaves, who was born in Bolivia, raised him and his older brother. Josh started playing basketball and soccer at Paul VI Catholic High School.

High School Success

As a junior, Josh became team captain. He scored about 12.6 points per game. His team, the Panthers, won several championships. These included the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference and the VISAA Division I State championship.

Before his senior year, Josh moved to Oak Hill Academy. Many experts thought he was one of the best young players in the country. He chose to play college basketball at Penn State. In his only season at Oak Hill, his team had an amazing record of 47 wins and only 1 loss.

College Basketball Career

Josh Reaves played four seasons for the Penn State Nittany Lions. He was a strong player from his first year.

Key College Achievements

  • As a freshman, he started 20 games and scored about 6.4 points per game.
  • In his second year, he led the Big Ten in steals, getting more than 2 steals per game.
  • During his junior year, he continued to be a great defender. He was named to the Big Ten All-Defensive Team.
  • In his senior year, he was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year. He led the Big Ten in steals for the third year in a row.

Josh finished his college career with over 1,000 points and set a school record with 250 steals.

Professional Basketball Journey

Dallas Mavericks (2019–2020)

After college, Josh was not chosen in the 2019 NBA draft. However, he joined the Dallas Mavericks for their Summer League team. He played very well, scoring 12.6 points per game.

Because of his strong performance, the Mavericks signed him to a special contract. He made his NBA debut on January 2, 2020. He scored his first points in an NBA game on August 10, 2020, against the Utah Jazz.

Rio Grande Valley Vipers (2021)

In 2021, Josh joined the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. This team is part of the NBA G League. He played in all 15 games of their shortened season. He averaged 12 points, 2.7 assists, and 4.4 rebounds per game.

Playing in Turkey (2021–2022)

In July 2021, Josh moved to Turkey to play for Beşiktaş Icrypex. This team is in Turkey's top basketball league. He played 23 games there, averaging 5.0 points per game.

In September 2022, he signed with another Turkish team, Tofaş. However, he left the team a month later and did not play in any league games for them.

Return to Rio Grande (2022–Present)

In November 2022, Josh Reaves returned to the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. He played 14 games in the 2022–23 regular season. He also played in all five of the team's playoff games. The Vipers reached the G-League Finals but lost. He continues to play for the Vipers.

Playing for Bolivia

Josh Reaves also plays for the Bolivian national team. He has dual citizenship because his mother is from Bolivia. He is a very important player for the team.

In the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup qualification games, he led Bolivia in points, assists, steals, and blocks. He is the first Bolivian player to play in the NBA.
