The Josiah Wilcox House is a special old house located at 354 Riversville Road in Greenwich, Connecticut. It was built in 1838. This house is known as one of the best examples of Greek Revival architecture in the town. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988, which means it's an important historical building.

What is the Josiah Wilcox House?

The Josiah Wilcox House is a beautiful home that looks like an ancient Greek temple. It is found in a neighborhood in western Greenwich. The house is made of wood and has two and a half stories. Its outside walls are covered with overlapping wooden boards called clapboards.

What Does It Look Like?

The most striking part of the house is its front. It has a grand "temple front" design. This means it looks like the front of a Greek temple. There are four tall, round columns that have grooves carved into them. These are called Ionic columns. They hold up a triangular shape above the entrance, which is called a gable pediment. In the middle of this triangle, there is a round window.

The front of the house has three sections, or "bays." The main door is on the right side. It has tall, narrow windows on either side, called sidelights. There is also a window above the door, called a transom window. The corners of the house have flat, decorative columns called pilasters. Inside the house, many original parts are still there. This includes the main staircase and the fancy frames around the fireplaces.

Who Was Josiah Wilcox?

The house was built in 1838 for a man named Josiah Wilcox. He was an important businessman in the area. Josiah Wilcox owned a factory near the Byram River. His factory made tools for tinning and parts for carriages. The house stayed in the Wilcox family for a long time, until 1943. The house has not changed much since the late 1800s. This makes it a great example of Greek Revival style in Greenwich.
