José García Nieto (born in Oviedo, Spain, on July 6, 1914 – died in Madrid, Spain, on February 27, 2001) was a famous Spanish poet and writer. He won the important Miguel de Cervantes Prize in 1996. He was part of a group of Spanish poets who wrote after the Spanish Civil War. This group is known as the "post-war generation." Other poets in this group included Gabriel Celaya, Blas de Otero, and José Hierro.
Life and Achievements
Early Life
José García Nieto was born in Oviedo, Spain, on July 6, 1914. His parents were José García Lueso and María de La Encarnación Nieto Fernández.
Major Awards and Recognition
José García Nieto won many important awards for his writing. In 1950, he received the Premio Adonais for his book Dama de soledad. In 1955, he won the Premio Fastenrath from the Real Academia Española for his work Geografía es amor.
He also won the Premio Nacional de Literatura de España twice, in 1951 and 1957. In 1980, he was awarded the Premio Mariano de Cavia.
In 1983, García Nieto became a member of the Real Academia Española. This is a very important institution that protects and guides the Spanish language. He held his seat there until he passed away.
Later, in 1987, he won the Premio González-Ruano. One of his biggest achievements was winning the Cervantes Prize in 1996. This is one of the most respected literary awards for Spanish-language writers.
