José Luis Ábalos Meco (born on December 9, 1959) is a Spanish politician. He has been a member of the Congress of Deputies since 2009. This means he helps make laws for Spain. He was a long-time member of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party, a major political group. He also served as a government minister from 2018 to 2021.

About José Luis Ábalos
José Luis Ábalos was born in Torrent, a city in Spain, in 1959. His father was a bullfighter, and his grandfather was a Civil Guard officer.
When he was 17, he joined a youth political group called the Communist Youth Union of Spain. Later, in 1978, he joined the Communist Party of Spain (PCE). In 1981, he joined another big political group, the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE).
Before becoming a full-time politician, Ábalos worked as a primary school teacher. This means he taught young students.
His Political Journey
Within the PSOE, José Luis Ábalos held several important roles. From 1988 to 1995, he was a leader for the PSOE in a part of Valencia city. After that, he became the main leader for the PSOE in all of Valencia city.
He was also a member of the Valencia City Council from 1999 to 2009. This council helps run the city. He also served in the Provincial Deputation of Valencia from 2003 to 2007, which is another local government body.
In 2009, he became a member of the Spanish Congress. This is like the parliament where national laws are made. He joined as a replacement for another politician.
In 2017, he became a spokesperson for his political group in Congress. He also became the Secretary of Organization for the PSOE. This was a very important job within his party.
Becoming a Minister
In June 2018, the Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, chose José Luis Ábalos to be a government minister. He was first the Minister of Development. This job involved planning and building things like roads and railways.
Later, in 2020, his job title changed to Minister of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda. This meant he was in charge of transport, how people move around, and planning cities.
He was re-elected as a Member of Parliament for Valencia in 2019. He continued his role as Minister in the new government.
In July 2021, he was replaced as Minister by Raquel Sánchez Jiménez. He also stepped down from his role as Secretary of Organization of the PSOE. After that, he became the president of the Interior Commission in Congress. He continued in this role after being re-elected in 2023.
Recent Events
In February 2024, there were reports about a former advisor to Mr. Ábalos. Because of these reports, José Luis Ábalos decided to leave his political group in Congress. He then became an independent member of Congress. Later, his membership in the Socialist Party was suspended.
In November 2024, the Supreme Court of Spain started a case involving Mr. Ábalos.
