José Macpherson y Hemas (1839–1902) was an important Spanish geologist. He is known for bringing new ways to study rocks to Spain. He helped introduce modern techniques for understanding the Earth.

Early Life and Family

José Macpherson was born in 1839 in Cádiz, a city in Spain. His father was from Scotland, and his mother was from Cádiz. His family worked as traders.

He was the younger brother of Guillermo Macpherson. Guillermo was a diplomat, which means he represented his country in other nations. He was also an archaeologist, someone who studies old human history, and a translator, who changes words from one language to another.

Contributions to Science and Education

In 1875, José Macpherson met Francisco Giner de los Ríos. Francisco was the person who started the Institución Libre de Enseñanza (ILE). This was a special educational group in Spain.

José Macpherson began working with the ILE. He later became a lecturer there in 1882. A lecturer is like a teacher who gives talks or lessons.

He was also a member of the Real Sociedad Española de Historia Natural. This was a group for people interested in natural history in Spain. He also helped start the Sociedad Geográfica de Madrid. This group focused on geography and exploring.

Later Life

José Macpherson passed away on October 11, 1902. He was 63 years old. He died in La Granja, a town in Spain.
