José Manuel Sierra Méndez, born on May 21, 1978, is a famous Spanish handball coach and a former player. He was a talented goalkeeper. In 2013, he helped the Spanish team win the World Championship in handball.

Playing Career Highlights
José Manuel Sierra started playing handball when he was young. He played for a youth team called CB Pedro Alonso Niño de Moguer. When he was 18, he joined one of the biggest clubs, FC Barcelona.
Early Club Success
At FC Barcelona, José Manuel Sierra was the third goalkeeper. Even so, he helped his team win many important titles. These included the Spanish Championship, the EHF Champions League, the Spanish Supercup, and the Spanish Cup multiple times.
In 2000, he moved to BM Valladolid. There, he won the Copa ASOBAL in 2003. After that, he played for Ciudad Real for a year, where he won the Spanish Championship and Copa ASOBAL again. He then returned to BM Valladolid.
Playing in France and Hungary
In 2012, José Manuel Sierra joined the French team Paris Saint-Germain. With them, he won the French Championship in 2013 and the French Cup in 2014.
After his time in France, he moved to Hungary in 2014 to play for Pick Szeged.
Later Career and Retirement
In 2018, he went back to France to play for Saran Loiret Handball. In 2020, when he was 42 years old, he returned to Spain to join Bidasoa Irún. In 2021, his team finished second in the league, right behind his old club, FC Barcelona.
José Manuel Sierra retired from playing handball after the 2021-2022 season. He was 44 years old when he stopped playing professionally.
National Team Journey
José Manuel Sierra first played for the Spanish national team on June 27, 2003. His first game was a 24:24 draw against Serbia. In 2005, he won a Gold Medal with the Spanish team at the 2005 Mediterranean Games.
For a long time, he was the third-choice goalkeeper for Spain. He played in several major tournaments. These included the European Championships in 2008, 2010, and 2012. He also played in the World Championship in 2009.
His biggest achievement with the national team came in 2013. He helped Spain win the World Championship. A year later, in 2014, he won a bronze medal at the European Championship held in Denmark.
Coaching Career
After retiring as a player in 2022, José Manuel Sierra started a new chapter in his handball career. He became an assistant coach for the French club Limoges Handball. He works alongside head coach Alberto Entrerríos.
