Who Was José María Estrada?
José María Estrada was born in 1802 in Granada. At that time, Granada was a main city for the Conservative political group. Estrada became a lawyer and a politician. He was part of the Conservative Party in Nicaragua.
Becoming President
In 1855, Nicaragua was in the middle of a civil war. This war was between two main political groups: the Liberals and the Conservatives (also called Legitimists). The previous president, Fruto Chamorro, who was a Conservative, passed away.
After Chamorro's death, José María Estrada was chosen to be the temporary president for the Conservatives. He officially took office on March 12, 1855.
Challenges During His Presidency
Estrada's time as president was very challenging. There were efforts to make peace in the country. However, Estrada decided to continue the war. He did not agree with the peace ideas.
During this time, an American adventurer named William Walker arrived in Nicaragua. Walker and his group of fighters, called filibusters, got involved in the civil war. They supported the Liberal side.
On October 13, 1855, William Walker and his forces took control of Granada. This was a major blow to Estrada's government.
Leaving Office and Later Efforts
After Walker took Granada, Estrada left the presidency on October 23, 1855. Walker then appointed Patricio Rivas as the new president.
Estrada left Nicaragua for a short time. But he soon returned, determined to restart the Conservative government. On June 21, 1856, he began to reorganize his government in a place called Somotillo.
He appointed Tomás Martínez as the main military leader. Martínez later became president himself after William Walker was forced out of Nicaragua. José María Estrada passed away on August 13, 1856.
