José Ruiz y Blasco (born April 12, 1838 – died May 3, 1913) was a Spanish painter and art teacher. He is best known as the father of the famous artist Pablo Ruiz Picasso.

José Ruiz y Blasco: Family Life

José Ruiz y Blasco was born in Málaga, Spain, in 1838. He grew up in a middle-class family. When he was 42 years old, he married María Picasso López. She was 17 years younger than him.

They had three children together. Their first child, Pablo, was born on October 25, 1881. Their daughter Dolores, called "Lola," was born in 1884. Their youngest daughter, Concepción, known as "Conchita," was born in 1887. Sadly, when Pablo was 13, Conchita died at age seven from a sickness called diphtheria.

José Ruiz y Blasco: His Career as an Artist and Teacher

From 1875 to 1890, José Ruiz y Blasco worked as an art teacher. He taught at the Escuela Provincial de Bellas Artes San Telmo. He was especially good at painting still lifes, landscapes, and pictures of doves and pigeons. He also worked at the Museo Municipal in Málaga. There, he helped take care of artworks and fix old paintings.

In 1891, Ruiz y Blasco moved his family to A Coruña. He started teaching at the Escuela de Bellas Artes. His son, Pablo, even took his ornamental drawing classes there.

José Ruiz y Blasco tried to earn money from his own paintings. However, he was not very successful. He showed his art twice in A Coruña. But the reviews were not very good. This was very different from the great praise his son Pablo received for his art. Because of this, José decided to stop trying to become a famous painter himself.

In 1895, he moved to Barcelona. He then taught at the Escuela de Bellas Artes, also known as "La Lonja."

How José Ruiz y Blasco Influenced Pablo Picasso

Early in his son's life, José Ruiz y Blasco saw that Pablo had a special talent for art. He began teaching Pablo art when he was just seven years old. Pablo painted his very first painting, Le petit picador jaune, when he was eight.

His father believed that the best way to learn art was to copy the works of great artists. In 1892, he enrolled Pablo in the Fine Arts School in Coruña. There, Pablo really improved his drawing skills.

When Pablo was 13, he started going to the Escuela de Bellas Artes in Barcelona. His father was very impressed by Pablo's talent. However, they sometimes had a difficult relationship. In Barcelona, José Ruiz y Blasco often posed for his son's artwork. Pablo drew many portraits of his father.

José also helped Pablo create some of his famous paintings, like Science and Charity. He even rented a studio to help Picasso have a place to work.

Later in his life, Pablo Picasso told a photographer named Brassaï why he painted so many men with beards. Picasso said, "Yes, they are all bearded, do you know why? Every time I draw a man, I accidentally think of my father. For me, the man is Don José and he will be like that all my life..."
