Jovino's Musical Journey
Starting Young
Jovino started playing the piano when he was 13 years old. By the time he was 16, he was already playing keyboards in a band called the Vacancy Group. This band was in Bangu, a neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
From Biology to Music
Interestingly, Jovino first studied Biology at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. He also studied at Macdonald College of McGill University in Montreal, Canada. Even with his science background, music was his true calling!
Joining a Famous Group
In 1977, Jovino joined the group led by the famous Brazilian composer Hermeto Pascoal. This was a big step in his career. He worked as a pianist, flutist, composer, arranger, and producer for Hermeto's group. He stayed with them until 1992.
Moving to the United States
After leaving Hermeto's group in 1992, Jovino moved to the United States. Since then, he has released many of his own music albums. He travels around the world, performing with his own band. He has also played with other great musicians like Airto Moreira, Flora Purim, and Mike Marshall.
Sharing His Knowledge
Jovino Santos Neto is also a dedicated teacher. He taught at Seattle's Cornish College of the Arts for 26 years, finishing in May 2020. After that, he continued teaching music online using Zoom. He also often teaches at Jazz Camp West, helping young musicians learn and grow.
