Rev. Joy Joseph Johnson was an important African-American leader. He was a Baptist minister and a politician from North Carolina. He passed away on December 30, 1996.
Johnson made history in the North Carolina House of Representatives. He was the second African-American person to serve there. This happened after the Voting Rights Act was passed. This law helped make sure all citizens could vote.
He followed another important leader, Rep. Henry E. Frye. Joy Joseph Johnson served in the House of Representatives from 1971 to 1979. He represented Robeson County, North Carolina.
Johnson was also a dedicated religious leader. He was the ninth pastor of the First Baptist Church. This church is located in Fairmont, North Carolina.
