Joy Page's Early Life
Joy Page was born to Don Alvarado, a Mexican-American silent film star. Silent films were movies made before sound was added. Her mother was Ann Boyar. Joy's parents divorced when she was eight years old.
In 1936, her mother married Jack L. Warner. He was the head of Warner Bros. studios, a very famous movie company. Even though her stepfather ran a big studio, he did not want Joy to become an actress.
Joy Page's Acting Career
Joy Page got her role in Casablanca all by herself. She was only seventeen and had just finished high school. Her stepfather, Jack L. Warner, did not want her to be in the movie, but he finally said yes. Joy, along with Dooley Wilson and Humphrey Bogart, were the only American actors in the film.
Even after Casablanca was a huge hit, Warner refused to sign Joy to a contract. This meant she could not make more movies for Warner Bros. She then acted in films for other studios. One of her next big roles was in Kismet in 1944.
She was often called Joanne Page in her films. She also appeared on television shows. In 1945, Joy married actor William T. Orr. He later became an executive at Warner Bros. This led to some people saying he got his job because he was married to Joy, which is called nepotism.
Joy Page stopped acting after appearing in the TV miniseries The Swamp Fox in 1959. Before that, her last movie role was in Tonka (1958). In Tonka, she played Prairie Flower, a Sioux Indian mother. She also appeared in an episode of the TV show Wagon Train.
