Nepotism facts for kids
Nepotism is when someone in a powerful position gives special jobs or favors to their relatives or close friends. They do this even if other people might be more qualified for the job. The word "nepotism" comes from the Italian word nepote, which means 'nephew'. This is because, a long time ago, Popes often gave important jobs to their nephews.

How Nepotism Started
Nepotism became very common during the Middle Ages when Popes would appoint their nephews to important roles, like being a cardinal. This helped the Pope's family gain more power and influence.
Famous Examples from History
- Pope Callixtus III, who was part of the Borgia family, made two of his nephews cardinals. One of them, Rodrigo, later became Pope Alexander VI.
- Pope Alexander VI then made Alessandro Farnese a cardinal. Alessandro was the brother of Alexander's mistress. Alessandro Farnese later became Pope Paul III.
- Pope Paul III was well-known for nepotism. When he became Pope in 1534, he appointed two of his nephews as cardinals, even though they were only 14 and 16 years old!
Ending Papal Nepotism
The practice of Popes giving jobs to their relatives finally ended in 1692. Pope Innocent XII issued a special rule called a bull named Romanum decet Pontificem. This rule stopped Popes from giving land, jobs, or money to any relatives. It allowed only one qualified relative to become a cardinal, but no more.
Nepotism Today
In the modern world, most people believe nepotism is wrong. It goes against the idea of meritocracy, which means the best person should get the job based on their skills and experience, not because they are related to someone powerful.
Why Nepotism is a Problem
When people get jobs because of who they know, instead of what they can do, it can cause problems.
- Unfairness: It's not fair to others who work hard and are qualified but don't have family connections.
- Less Skilled People: Sometimes, the person hired through nepotism isn't the best choice, which can lead to poor work or decisions.
- Damages the Economy: If important jobs are filled by less capable people, it can hurt businesses and even a country's economy. This is because things might not be managed as well as they could be.
