Juan Alaminos y de Vivar (1813–1899) was a Spanish general. He served as the 96th Governor-General of the Philippines. This means he was the main leader of the Philippines when it was ruled by Spain.
Life and Career
Juan Alaminos y Vivar was born in Cuéllar, Spain, on October 27, 1813. Not much is known about his early life. He began his military career by fighting in the First Carlist War (1833–1839). Later, he served under General Juan Prim, 1st Marquis of los Castillejos during the Hispano-Moroccan War (1859–60).
In 1871, Alaminos became a Senator for Burgos. A senator is like a member of a country's law-making body. The next year, in 1872, he became a senator for Córdoba.
Governor-General of the Philippines
Juan Alaminos became the Governor-General of the Philippines on January 24, 1873. He was the first Governor-General to travel to and from the Philippines by steamship. This was a new and faster way to travel at the time.
During his time as Governor-General, Alaminos had disagreements with the Archbishop of Manila, Gregorio Melitón Martínez. These arguments were part of a bigger conflict between the Spanish government in the Philippines and the church leaders.
Alaminos's term ended in 1874. He was replaced by a temporary governor. Juan Alaminos y Vivar passed away in 1899. Two places in the Philippines, Alaminos, Pangasinan and Alaminos, Laguna, were named in his honor.
His Family
Juan Alaminos came from a noble family that had been important since the 1600s. His brother, Francisco Alaminos y Vivar, was a lawyer. Francisco served as mayor of Rute in 1828 and of Cabra in 1834. Juan's nephew, Francisco Alaminos y Chacon, worked as his assistant. Later, his nephew became the Governor of Luzon. Error: no page names specified (help). In Spanish: Juan Alaminos y Vivar para niños
