Juan Alonso Pérez de Guzmán, 3rd Duke of Medina Sidonia facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Don Juan Alonso Pérez de Guzmán (born in February 1464 – died in 1507) was an important Spanish noble. He became the 3rd Duke of Medina Sidonia in 1492 when he was 28 years old. A duke is a very high-ranking noble, often ruling over a large area of land.

In 1502, an important change happened: the city of Gibraltar became part of the Spanish Crown. This meant that the old title of Marquisate of Gibraltar no longer existed.

Family Life

Don Juan Alonso married twice during his life. He had several children who would later become dukes themselves.

His children included:

  • Enrique Pérez de Guzmán, 4th Duke of Medina Sidonia: He was the next duke, but he did not have any children.
  • Alfonso Pérez de Guzmán, 5th Duke of Medina Sidonia: He was declared unable to rule.
  • Juan Alfonso Pérez de Guzmán, 6th Duke of Medina Sidonia: He also married and continued the family line.
  • Leonor Pérez de Guzmán y Pérez de Guzmán: She married Jaime I, Duke of Braganza. He was one of the most powerful nobles in Portugal and all of Iberia (Spain and Portugal).
