Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Juan Claudio de la Hoz y Mota (born around 1630, died around 1710) was a Spanish writer who created plays for the theater. He was born in Madrid, a big city in Spain.

Early Life and Career

Juan Claudio de la Hoz y Mota became a Knight of Santiago in 1653. This was a special honor given to important people in Spain. Soon after, he took over his father's job as a regidor (a type of town council member) in the city of Burgos.

In 1665, he got an important job at the Treasury, which is like the government's money department. Later in his life, he worked as an official censor for the theaters in Madrid. This meant he checked plays to make sure they were suitable before they could be performed. On August 13, 1709, he finished writing a play called José, salvador de Egipto. It is thought that he passed away the following year.

His Work as a Playwright

Juan de la Hoz was not known for coming up with completely new ideas for plays. Instead, he was very good at taking older plays by other writers and rewriting them. He made them fresh and exciting for his time. People back then really respected his skill in adapting stories.

Two of his plays, El Montañés Juan Pascual and El castigo de la miseria, show how talented he was at changing and improving existing works. These plays were even printed in a famous collection called Biblioteca de Autores Españoles.
