Masdeu's Big History Book
Masdeu is best known for his huge history book. It was first called Storia critica di Spagne e della cultura spagnuola in ogni genere. This early version had two volumes and was published between 1781 and 1784.
Later, he expanded this work into an even bigger book called Historia crítica de España y de la cultura española. This expanded version was published from 1783 to 1805.
An Unfinished Masterpiece
Even though his history book had twenty volumes, it was never fully finished. If he had kept writing at the same pace, it might have grown to fifty volumes!
Masdeu was very careful about getting his facts right. He wrote in a way that was very accurate for his time. He focused a lot on small details in history.
His writing was clear and easy to understand. Even today, his work is still considered valuable by historians.
