Juan Antonio Giménez López (born November 26, 1943 – died April 2, 2020) was a famous Argentine comic book artist and writer. He was well-known for his very detailed drawings, especially of machines. His important works include stories for French magazines like Métal Hurlant and Argentinian ones like L'Eternauta. He also co-created the comic series Metabarons with Alejandro Jodorowsky.

Early Life and Career Beginnings

Juan Giménez López was born in Mendoza, Argentina. He studied industrial design in high school. Later, he went to art schools in Argentina and Barcelona, Spain. At first, he worked in advertising. But he also drew and wrote comics in his free time. By his thirties, he became a full-time comic artist.

Giménez started publishing his own stories when he was just sixteen. These appeared in Argentine magazines such as Frontera and Misterix. His early comics were inspired by other famous artists like Hugo Pratt.

Working in Europe

When he moved back to Spain, he worked for Spanish magazines like Zona 84. He also created art for Italian magazines, including Lanciostory. During this time, he mostly drew war and science fiction stories. In 1979, his first French comic, Leo Roa, was released.

Famous Works and Collaborations

In 1980, Juan Giménez helped design a part of the movie Heavy Metal. It was called "Harry Canyon." Throughout the 1980s, he worked with many European magazines. These included the Spanish 1984 and the French Métal Hurlant. He tried new ways of drawing and telling stories.

Time Paradox and Other Series

During this period, he created some of his best works. These were short science fiction stories called Time Paradox. Another important series was Ciudad, written by Ricardo Barreiro. He also wrote and drew Le Quatrième Pouvoir (The Fourth Power) by himself.

Giménez's art style was known for its incredible detail. He paid close attention to technical and historical facts. His series Pik As was even called "a comic encyclopedia of World War II."

The Metabarons Series

One of his most famous collaborations was with Chilean writer Alejandro Jodorowsky. They worked together on the popular Metabarons comic series. This series started in 1992 and continued until 2003. It was published by Humanoids.

The Metabarons stories were based on characters from another comic, The Incal. Giménez's art for Metabarons was highly praised. It brought Jodorowsky's huge and imaginative world to life. Jodorowsky said that Giménez was like a "master warrior" with his drawings.
