Juan Ismael (born December 19, 1907 – died August 24, 1981) was a very talented Spanish artist. He created art in many different ways. He was known for his painting, drawing, sculpture, and even photography! There is an art center named after him in Puerto del Rosario, called the Juan Ismael Arts Centre.
Juan Ismael's Early Life
Juan Ismael was born in a town called La Oliva, on the island of Fuerteventura. When he was a child, his family moved to another island, Tenerife. He started learning art at a special school in Santa Cruz. He studied there until he was 16 years old.
When Juan was 20, his father passed away. He then moved to Las Palmas to work in a photography lab. This is where he learned and became very skilled at photography.
His Artistic Journey in Spain
At age 20, Juan Ismael connected with the Luján Pérez school. This was a place where artists could try out new ideas. He then moved to mainland Spain. There, he joined the exciting art scene of the 1930s and 1940s. He spent time in big cities like Madrid and Barcelona.
He took classes to learn more about ceramics and painting. Juan had his very first art show in 1928. It was held at the Mars Theatre in La Palmas.
Juan Ismael passed away in Las Palmas in 1981.
