Juan José Ríos is an agricultural city in northern Sinaloa, Mexico. It's special because it's split between two different local government areas: most of it is in Guasave Municipality, and a smaller part is in Ahome Municipality. In 2010, the city had a population of 27,938 people.

History of Juan José Ríos

How Juan José Ríos Started

The area now known as Juan José Ríos was first called Ejido Las Vacas. An ejido is a piece of land used for farming by a community. It was officially created on September 21, 1938, by the Mexican President at the time, Lázaro Cárdenas del Río.

Back then, it was a large area of 16,420 hectares and had only 179 residents. Out of these, 64 were ejidatarios, which are people who have the right to farm on ejido land.

Growth and New Residents

Between 1946 and 1951, many farmers from nearby towns asked for land to farm in Ejido Las Vacas. By 1953 and 1954, the government had given land to all 672 people who asked for it.

Later, between 1952 and 1964, the Miguel Hidalgo Dam was built. This dam caused several towns in the El Fuerte and Choix areas to be flooded. People from these flooded towns needed new homes.

A New Home for Dam-Affected Families

On February 21, 1955, the government decided to build a new urban area in Ejido Las Vacas. This was for the 637 farming families who had to leave their homes because of the dam. Each family received a 10-hectare plot for farming and a plot for their home.

The original 64 ejidatarios of Las Vacas also lived there. To make space for all 1,375 ejidatarios and their families, another government decision was made. Each ejidatario was given a 1,600 square meter plot for their home. The new area was planned with streets, schools, and other public services. This new urban area was named Juan José Ríos and became a sindicatura, which is a type of local administrative division. At the time, it was the largest ejido in Mexico.

Who was Juan José Ríos?

The city is named after General Juan José Ríos, who was a Mexican politician and soldier during the Mexican Revolution. The engineers who planned the city chose this name. General Ríos was also the last owner of the land before it became an ejido.

On July 13, 1989, the Governor of Sinaloa, Francisco Labastida Ochoa, announced that Juan José Ríos had officially become a city.

Local Government in Sinaloa

In Sinaloa, municipalities are divided into smaller parts called sindicaturas. These sindicaturas are then divided into comisarías.

  • A sindicatura is led by a Síndico (male) or Síndica (female).
  • A comisaría is led by a Comisario (male) or Comisaria (female).

Juan José Ríos Sindicatura

The Juan José Ríos sindicatura is located in the northwestern part of Guasave Municipality. The main town of this sindicatura is the city of Juan José Ríos itself.

This sindicatura covers an area of 960.24 hectares. This makes it the second largest sindicatura in Guasave Municipality, covering about 27.71% of its total area. The largest is the Central Sindicatura of Guasave city.

The Juan José Ríos sindicatura includes two comisarías: Bachoco and Ejido Campo 38.

Future of Juan José Ríos

For a long time, the people of Juan José Ríos have asked the Sinaloa Government to create a new Juan José Ríos Municipality.
