Maldonado's Time at LCC
Juan Maldonado was the president of Laredo Community College for many years. He worked to guide the college and make decisions about its future.
College Trustee Elections
In 2014, Maldonado became involved in the elections for the college's board of trustees. Trustees are like a governing board for the college. They help make big decisions. Maldonado supported certain candidates, like Jackie L. Ramos and Ed Gonzalez. He even wrote letters to the local newspaper, Laredo Morning Times, to share his views.
Some people wondered if it was appropriate for a college president to be so involved in these elections. Maldonado took some time off during the campaign. He said he wanted to help bring a sense of professionalism back to the college. After the elections, some of the candidates Maldonado supported won their races.
Changes in Leadership
In January 2015, there was a disagreement involving Nora Stewart, who was the chief financial officer at LCC. Maldonado suspended her from her job. Her lawyer said she was being treated unfairly for doing her job.
Later, the college's trustees decided to end Stewart's time at the college. However, they soon changed their minds and voted to keep her contract for another year.
Maldonado's Retirement
In June 2015, the LCC trustees decided not to extend Maldonado's contract for another year. This meant he had to retire earlier than he had planned. His last day as president was August 1, 2016.
Who Came After Maldonado?
In May 2016, the trustees chose Ricardo Solis to be the next president of LCC. Solis had worked at GateWay Community College in Phoenix, Arizona. The trustees then bought out the last month of Maldonado's contract and hired Solis.
Maldonado had started as president with an annual salary of $150,000 in 2007. When he left LCC, he received about $100,000 for unused sick leave and vacation days.
After retiring, Juan Maldonado and his wife, Linda, lived in San Antonio, Texas. He passed away there in 2018. U.S. Representative Henry Cuellar said Maldonado was a "great leader and visionary" who helped many students.
