Juan López de Palacios Rubios (1450–1524) was an important Spanish lawyer and judge. People called him El Doctor because he was an expert in canon law, which is the law of the Christian Church. He is most famous for writing a document called the Requerimiento. This document was read to Native Americans during the Spanish conquest of America.

The Requerimiento told the native people that they should peacefully accept the Spanish king as their ruler and the Pope as their spiritual leader. If they did not agree, the document warned that they would be forced to submit.

Early Life and Education

Juan López de Palacios Rubios studied at the University of Salamanca. This was a very famous university in Spain. Later, he even became a professor of law there. He was known for his deep knowledge of legal matters.

Working for the King and Queen

Juan López held many important jobs during his life. He worked for the Spanish monarchs, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella. He was the president of the Mesta, which was a powerful organization for sheep herders in Spain. He also served as a judge in the city of Valladolid.

The Requerimiento Explained

As a member of the Council of Castile starting in 1504, Juan López de Palacios Rubios helped create important laws. One of his most significant contributions was the Requerimiento. This document was a way for the Spanish to try and justify their actions in the Americas. It was read aloud to the native people, often in Spanish, which they did not understand.

The Requerimiento basically said that God had given the Pope authority over all lands. The Pope, in turn, had given the Spanish monarchs the right to claim the new lands in America. It told the native people they must accept Spanish rule and Christianity. If they refused, the Spanish would consider it an act of war. This document was controversial because it put the native people in a difficult position.

Laws and Spanish Rule

Juan López was also involved in writing the Laws of Toro, which were enacted in 1505. These laws were very important for the legal system in Spain. He strongly believed in Spain's right to rule the new lands in the Americas. He wrote a legal book called Oceanis Insulis Libellus. In this book, he carefully explained his legal reasons for why Spanish rule in the American territories was legitimate. He tried to show that Spain had a legal and moral right to be there.

Other Important Works

Besides his legal writings, Juan López de Palacios Rubios also wrote about military topics. His most famous military work was called Treaty of heroic war effort, published in Salamanca in 1524. This was the only book he wrote in the Castilian language that had a clear political message.
