Juan Pablo Fusi Aizpurúa was born in 1945 in San Sebastián, Spain. He is a famous Spanish historian. He knows a lot about recent history, the Basque Country, and how different groups form their own identities.

His Education

Juan Pablo Fusi studied history at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid in Spain. He earned his first degree and then a Ph.D. (a very high degree) in history from this university.

He also earned another Ph.D. from the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom. Later, New York University gave him a special honorary doctorate in Humanities.

Teaching History

Mr. Fusi has spent much of his life teaching history. He is currently a Professor of History at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. He has held a special teaching position there since 1988.

He has taught at many universities. These include places like Colegio Universitario San Pablo-CEU, and universities in Murcia, Cantabria, and the Basque Country in Spain.

He also taught in the United States at the universities of California and Wisconsin. In the UK, he taught at Oxford. From 1976 to 1980, he was the Director of the Centre for Iberian Studies at St Antony's College.

Important Roles

Between 1986 and 1990, Juan Pablo Fusi was the Director of the Biblioteca Nacional de España. This is Spain's National Library, a very important place for books and documents. He is still part of its board of trustees.

He also worked as the Academic Director at the Instituto Universitario de Investigación Ortega y Gasset. He was also at the Fundación José Ortega y Gasset from 2001 to 2006. He continues to be a trustee there.

In 2014, he was chosen to be a member of the Real Academia de la Historia. This is a very respected group of historians in Spain.

Expert Committee Work

Juan Pablo Fusi was part of a special group of experts. This group helped the Spanish government decide about the "Salamanca Papers". These were important historical documents.

The committee included other famous people like Federico Mayor Zaragoza. In 2004, most of the experts agreed. They said it was fair for these documents to be returned to the government of Catalonia. The documents were finally moved in 2005.
