Learning and Degrees
Juan Pablo Fusi studied history at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid in Spain. He earned his first history degree and later a special Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy) from this same university.
He also continued his studies at the famous University of Oxford in the United Kingdom, where he earned another Ph.D. Later, New York University gave him a special award called Doctor Honoris Causa in Humanities. This is an honorary degree given to people who have achieved great things.
Teaching History to Students
Mr. Fusi has spent a big part of his life teaching history at universities. He is currently a Professor of History at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, where he has held a top teaching position in Contemporary History since 1988.
Before that, he taught at several other universities in Spain, including those in Murcia, Cantabria, and the Basque Country. He also taught in the United States at universities like California and Wisconsin. A very important part of his career was being the Director of the Centre for Iberian Studies at St Antony's College in Oxford from 1976 to 1980.
Important Roles and Positions
From 1986 to 1990, Juan Pablo Fusi was the Director of the Biblioteca Nacional de España, which is Spain's national library. He is still a member of its board, helping to guide the library.
He also worked as the Academic Director at the Instituto Universitario de Investigación Ortega y Gasset and the Fundación José Ortega y Gasset from 2001 to 2006. He continues to be a trustee and an Emeritus Fellow there, meaning he is still involved and respected for his past work.
In 2014, Juan Pablo Fusi was chosen to be a member of the Real Academia de la Historia, which is a very old and respected group of historians in Spain. He holds "medalla nº 15" (medal number 15) in this academy.
Helping with Important Documents
Juan Pablo Fusi was part of a special group of experts. This group was created to give advice to the Spanish government about some important historical documents known as the "Salamanca Papers". There was a discussion about whether these documents should be returned to the government of Catalonia.
In 2004, most of the experts in the committee, 14 out of 17 members, agreed that it was fair and right for the documents to be given back to Catalonia. The documents were finally moved in 2005.
