Conquering the Inca Empire

Juan and his brothers, led by Francisco Pizarro, helped conquer the mighty Inca Empire. This happened in 1533. The Inca Empire was a large and advanced civilization in South America. After the conquest, Juan and Gonzalo Pizarro were given important roles. They became regidores (officials) in the city of Cuzco. They were in charge of keeping the city safe with about ninety soldiers. This was while Francisco Pizarro traveled to another city called Jauja.

The Siege of Cuzco

In early 1536, a huge Inca army attacked the city of Cuzco. About two hundred thousand Inca warriors surrounded the two hundred Spanish soldiers. The Spanish, led by Hernando, Gonzalo, and Juan Pizarro, defended the city. They fought back with counterattacks.

Juan Pizarro led a brave attack to take back a fortress overlooking the city. He had been hit by a slingshot earlier, and his jaw was swollen. Because of this, he could not wear his helmet. During the fight, Juan was hit in the head by a large stone. He died about two weeks later from his injuries.
