Juan Ramírez Mejandre (born March 23, 1680 – died July 15, 1739) was a famous Spanish sculptor. He worked in the Baroque style, which was popular for its dramatic and detailed art.
Juan Ramírez Mejandre was the leader of an artistic family from a region in Spain called Aragon. His sons, Manuel Ramirez de Arellano and José Ramírez de Arellano, also became sculptors. Another son, Juan Ramírez de Arellano, became a painter.
Early Life and Training
Juan Ramírez Mejandre first learned his craft from a sculptor named Gregorio Aragon Mesa. This training helped him develop his skills in creating beautiful sculptures.
Starting an Art School
In 1714, Juan Ramírez Mejandre started his own Drawing Academy in the city of Zaragoza. This school taught young artists how to draw and create art. He ran this academy until he passed away in 1739.
A Leading Artist
By the end of the War of the Spanish Succession, Juan Ramírez Mejandre was known as one of the best sculptors in Aragon during the 1700s. Many of his amazing artworks can still be seen today in the La Seo Cathedral.
