José Ramírez de Arellano (born around 1705, died March 27, 1770) was a talented Spanish artist. He was both an architect, who designs buildings, and a sculptor, who creates art from materials like stone or wood. He worked in the Baroque style, which was popular for its dramatic and detailed art.

Early Life of José Ramírez de Arellano

José Ramírez de Arellano came from a family of artists in Aragon, Spain. His father, Juan Ramírez Mejandre, was also a famous sculptor. José had two brothers who were also artists: Manuel Ramírez de Arellano was a sculptor, and Juan Ramírez de Arellano was a painter.

In 1714, José's father started the first Academy of Drawing in Aragon. This was a special school where young artists could learn to draw and create art. José helped his father run this academy. Many important artists from Zaragoza helped teach there. One of them was José Luzán, who later taught the famous painter Francisco Goya when Goya was just starting his art journey.

José Ramírez's Artistic Career

In 1740, José Ramírez de Arellano received a very important title: Sculptor to the King. This meant he was officially recognized as a top artist by the King of Spain, Charles III of Spain.

A big project came his way in 1751. He was asked to manage the construction and decoration of the Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar. This was a huge church project in Zaragoza. José worked with other well-known artists on this job. For example, the painter Antonio González Velázquez was hired to paint the dome of the temple. Another famous architect, Ventura Rodríguez, trusted José so much that he let José handle almost all the work on the church's main altar, called the tabernacle.

From 1752, José and his brother Manuel moved their art workshop and home to Zaragoza. They worked together on many projects from this new location.

Later Years and Legacy

In 1755, José Ramírez de Arellano married Michelle Heras Diego. They had three children who grew up to be adults.

His artistic achievements continued to be recognized. In 1758, he became a Royal Academician of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando. This was a very respected art academy in Spain. José Ramírez de Arellano passed away in Zaragoza in 1770, leaving behind many beautiful sculptures and architectural works.
