Juan Ramírez de Arellano (born 1725, died 1782) was a Spanish painter. He lived during a time called the Baroque period. This was a time when art was very grand and dramatic.
Early Life and Training
Juan Ramírez de Arellano came from a family of artists. His family was from a region in Spain called Aragon. His father, Juan Ramírez Mejandre, was a sculptor. A sculptor is an artist who makes statues. Juan's brother, José Ramírez de Arellano, was also a sculptor. His brother sometimes helped him with the colors for his paintings in churches in Zaragoza.
Juan learned to paint from a teacher named José Luzán. Later, he moved to Madrid. There, he continued his training with another artist, Pablo Pernicharo. Juan's paintings also show that he was inspired by the artist Corrado Giaquinto.
Important Paintings
Juan Ramírez de Arellano did not create many paintings that we know of today. But the ones we do know are very special.
One of his most famous works is called The Virgin and Child with St. Anne. You can see this painting at the National Museum of Romanticism. There is also a sketch of it at the Museo del Prado. For a while, some people thought this painting was made by a young Francisco Goya. But it is signed by Juan Ramírez de Arellano himself.
He also painted a picture of King Charles III of Spain. This portrait is kept at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando.
