Early Life and Military Career
Juan Ramón González de Balcarce was the older brother of two other notable figures, Antonio González de Balcarce and Marcos González de Balcarce. He began his military career by fighting against the British during their invasions of the Río de la Plata in 1807.
Later, from 1812 to 1813, he took part in a military campaign in Upper Peru (which is now Bolivia). He served under the famous General Manuel Belgrano, who is known for creating the Argentine flag.
Political Leadership in Buenos Aires
Juan Ramón González de Balcarce served multiple times as the governor of Buenos Aires. His first time as governor was from 1818 to 1820.
He also held the position of defense minister under the government of Juan Manuel de Rosas. This shows his continued involvement in the political and military leadership of the country.
In 1832, he was elected governor of Buenos Aires again. However, his time in office faced challenges.
Challenges as Governor
In October 1833, there was a lot of political tension in Buenos Aires. Many people, especially gauchos and poor citizens, gathered to support Juan Manuel de Rosas. They demanded that Balcarce step down as governor.
The soldiers who were supposed to control the crowd instead joined the protest. Because of this strong public pressure, the government decided to remove Balcarce from his position. He was replaced by Juan José Viamonte.
After being removed from office, Balcarce was held for a short time. He later went to live in Concepción del Uruguay, where he passed away.
