Juan Sandoval Íñiguez was born on March 28, 1933, in Yahualica, Mexico. He is a retired leader of the Catholic Church. He served as the Archbishop of Guadalajara from 1994 to 2011. In 1994, Pope John Paul II made him a Cardinal.

Becoming a Church Leader
Juan Sandoval Íñiguez is the oldest of 12 children. He began his studies to become a priest in 1945. Later, he moved to Rome, Italy, to continue his education. He became a priest in Rome in 1957.
In 1961, he returned to Mexico. He started working at the seminary in Guadalajara, Jalisco. A seminary is a school where people study to become priests. He first taught there and then became the rector, which is like the principal of the school.
Serving as Bishop and Archbishop
In 1988, Juan Sandoval was named a Coadjutor bishop for Ciudad Juárez. This means he was chosen to help the current bishop. In 1992, he became the main bishop of Ciudad Juárez.
In April 1994, he was chosen to be the Archbishop of Guadalajara. He took over from Cardinal Juan Jesús Posadas Ocampo. Later that same year, he was given the important title of Cardinal.
Important Roles as Cardinal
As a Cardinal, Juan Sandoval Íñiguez had several important duties.
Electing Popes
He was one of the Cardinals who helped choose a new Pope two times.
- In 2005, he participated in the meeting that elected Pope Benedict XVI.
- In 2013, he was part of the group that elected Pope Francis.
Teaching and Retirement
Cardinal Sandoval also appeared regularly on "Mariavisión." This is a Mexican Catholic TV channel based in Guadalajara. He would teach about the catechism, which explains the beliefs of the Catholic Church.
On December 7, 2011, Pope Benedict XVI accepted his retirement. Cardinal Francisco Robles Ortega became the new Archbishop of Guadalajara.
Sharing His Views
Even after retirement, Cardinal Sandoval continued to share his opinions on church matters. In August 2023, he and other Cardinals sent questions to Pope Francis. These questions were about important topics for the church. He also supported traditional church practices. In 2024, he asked Pope Francis not to limit these practices further.
