Juan Sandoval Íñiguez (Spanish pronunciation: [xwan sandoˈβal ˈiɲiɣes]) was born on March 28, 1933. He is a Mexican religious leader who used to be the Archbishop of Guadalajara. He served in this important role from 1994 to 2011. In 1994, Pope John Paul II made him a cardinal.

Becoming a Church Leader
Juan Sandoval Íñiguez is the oldest of 12 children. His parents were Esteban Sandoval Ruiz and María Guadalupe Íñiguez de Sandoval.
Early Studies and Priesthood
He began his studies to become a priest in 1945. Later, he moved to Rome, Italy, to continue his education. In 1957, he was ordained as a priest in Rome.
Returning to Mexico
In 1961, Juan Sandoval Íñiguez came back to Mexico. He started working at the seminary in Guadalajara, Jalisco. A seminary is a school where people study to become priests. He first worked as a teacher there. Later, he became the rector, which is like the head of the school.
Becoming a Bishop and Archbishop
In 1988, Sandoval was named a Coadjutor bishop for Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua. A coadjutor bishop helps the main bishop and is expected to take over when the main bishop leaves. He became the bishop of Ciudad Juárez in 1992.
In April 1994, he was chosen to be the Archbishop of Guadalajara. This is a very important position in the Catholic Church in Mexico. Later that same year, he was made a cardinal.
Participating in Papal Elections
Cardinals have a special job: they help choose the new Pope. Cardinal Sandoval was one of the cardinals who voted in the 2005 papal conclave. This was the election that chose Pope Benedict XVI.
He also participated in the 2013 papal conclave. This election chose Pope Francis as the new leader of the Catholic Church.
Retirement and Later Years
On December 7, 2011, Pope Benedict XVI accepted Cardinal Sandoval's retirement. After his retirement, Cardinal José Francisco Robles Ortega was appointed as the new Archbishop of Guadalajara.
Cardinal Sandoval has also appeared on "Mariavisión," a Mexican Catholic TV network. He often teaches about the catechism, which is a book of Catholic teachings, during short programs.
