The Holy Family by Juan Simón Gutiérrez, 1680

Juan Simón Gutiérrez (born 1634, died 1718) was a Spanish Baroque painter. He lived and worked during a time when art was very grand and dramatic.

Early Life and Training

Juan Simón Gutiérrez was born in a town called Medina-Sidonia in Spain. Later, he moved to the city of Seville. In Seville, he met and studied with a very famous painter named Bartolomé Esteban Murillo. Murillo's artistic style had a big influence on Gutiérrez's own paintings.

Gutiérrez joined the Academia de Bellas Artes (Seville) (Academy of Fine Arts) between 1664 and 1667. He also got married in 1667. In 1680, he became responsible for the entrance exams for new students at the Academy. This shows he was a respected artist and teacher.

His Artworks

Only two of Juan Simón Gutiérrez's paintings are known to be signed by him. One is called Madonna and Child with Saint Augustine. It was painted in 1686 and is kept in a convent in Carmona. Many people think this painting is his best work. It shows a holy scene with great skill.

His other signed painting is Death of Santo Domingo assisted by Virgin, painted in 1711. You can see this artwork at the Museum of Fine Arts of Seville.

Other paintings are believed to be by Gutiérrez, even if they aren't signed. You can find some of these works in places like the Wallace Collection in London and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in the USA. There are also paintings attributed to him in the church of St. Mary the Crowned in Medina Sidonia, and in private art collections.
