Juan Crisóstomo Vélez de Guevara (born in Madrid in 1611 – died in Madrid on November 20, 1675) was an important Spanish writer. He was the son of another famous writer, Luis Vélez de Guevara. Like his father, Juan was a playwright during a special time in Spain called the Spanish Golden Age.

Juan Vélez followed in his father's footsteps in many ways. He started working for the Duque de Veragua as a lawyer. Later, in 1642, he took over his father's job as an Usher of the Royal Chamber. This was an important role in the royal court.

His Plays and Writings

Juan Vélez de Guevara was very well-known for writing short plays. These included entremeses and bailes. Many of these short, funny plays were performed for the Spanish royal family.

He also wrote longer plays. Some of his famous full-length works include:

  • El diciembre por agosto, Nuestra Señora de las Nieves (written in 1637)
  • Endimión y la luna (written in 1656)
  • The zarzuela (a Spanish musical play) called Los celos hacen estrella (written in 1672)

Working with Other Writers

Juan Vélez de Guevara often worked with other playwrights. They would write plays together. Some of his collaborative works include:

  • Amor vencido de Amor (with Juan de Zabaleta and Antonio de la Huerta)
  • La verdad en el engaño (with Jerónimo de Cáncer and Martínez de Meneses)
  • The funny play Los siete infantes de Lara (written in 1650, with Jerónimo de Cáncer)
  • La cortesana en la sierra and El hidalgo de La Mancha (with Juan Bautista Diamante and Juan de Matos Fragoso)
