Juan de la Sal (died January 14, 1630) was an important leader in the Catholic Church. He served as an Auxiliary Bishop in Seville, Spain, from 1603 to 1630. He also held the title of Titular Bishop of Hippo Diarrhytus.
Who Was Juan de la Sal?
Juan de la Sal was a high-ranking official in the Catholic Church. He was known as a "prelate." His main role was to help the main bishop in the city of Seville, Spain. This is what an "Auxiliary Bishop" does.
He also had a special title, "Titular Bishop of Hippo Diarrhytus." This means he was given a title from an ancient diocese that no longer exists. He didn't actually lead a church in Hippo Diarrhytus, but the title honored a historical place.
Becoming a Bishop
Juan de la Sal became an Auxiliary Bishop of Seville on October 22, 1603. This appointment happened during the time of Pope Clement VIII. In the same year, he had a special ceremony called a "consecration." During this ceremony, he was officially made a bishop.
The person who consecrated him was Fernando Niño de Guevara. He was the Archbishop of Seville at that time. Juan de la Sal continued to serve as Auxiliary Bishop until he passed away on January 14, 1630.
Helping Other Bishops
As a bishop, Juan de la Sal also helped other church leaders become bishops. He was a "principal co-consecrator" for several important ceremonies. This means he played a key role in helping to consecrate new bishops.
For example, he helped consecrate:
- Arcangelo Gualtieri, who became the Archbishop of Monreale in 1612.
- Martín Fernández Portocarrero, who became the Bishop of Ciudad Rodrigo in 1624.
- Fernando Andrade Sotomayor, who became the Bishop of Palencia in 1628.
