Judith P. Morgan (born April 27, 1930 – died June 30, 2016) was a talented First Nations artist. She was a member of the Gitxsan people and came from Kitwanga, British Columbia, Canada. Her art became well-known across Canada and the United States.

Judith P. Morgan was born in the village of Kitwanga in British Columbia. She was part of the Gitxsan and Tsimshian First Nations. Her family had strong ties to their community. Her father was a Tsimshian chief, and her mother also came from a family of tribal leaders.

Her Journey in Art and Education

Judith's artistic talent was encouraged from a young age. While attending the Alberni Indian Residential School, she met George Sinclair. He saw her potential and helped her develop her art skills. This encouragement led her to win a special two-year scholarship to Cottey College.

Later, in 1953, she married Willis O. Fitzpatrick. They had five children together. Even with a family, Judith continued her education. She went back to school at the University of Kansas. In 1976, she earned a bachelor's degree in art education.

Exhibitions and Awards

Judith P. Morgan started showing her artwork in the mid-1940s. Her paintings were displayed in many places. People could see her work in galleries and exhibitions across Canada and the United States.

She received several important awards for her art. In 1947, she won first prize at the Pacific National Exhibition in Vancouver. The next year, in 1948, she won another first prize. This was at the Arts and Crafts Society Exhibition in Victoria.

Her art was also recognized by the government. In 1949, the provincial government bought five of her paintings. These artworks have been loaned out and shown in many different places since then.

Returning Home

In 1983, Judith P. Morgan returned to her home village of Kitwanga. She continued to be an important figure in her community and in the world of First Nations art until her passing in 2016.
