Judith Dorothy Sherman (born November 12, 1942) is an American audio engineer and record producer. An audio engineer helps record music and makes sure it sounds good. A record producer helps artists create their music recordings.
Judith Sherman has been nominated for 18 Grammy Awards. She has won 14 of these awards! This includes the "Producer Of The Year, Classical" award seven times. She won this award in 1993, 2007, 2011, 2014, 2015, 2022, and 2023. She has worked with many famous composers like Steve Reich and Philip Glass. She has also worked with well-known groups such as the Kronos Quartet and the London Symphony Orchestra.
Judith Sherman's Early Life and Career
Judith Sherman was born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1942. Her parents were LaVerne Luekens Smith and William Paul Luekens. She went to Valparaiso University and earned a Bachelor's Degree in 1964. Later, she received a Master of Fine Arts degree from the State University of New York (Buffalo) in 1971.
After college, Judith worked in New York City. From 1971 to 1972, she worked for Edd Kalehoff. She then worked at WBAI, a radio station in New York. She started there as an engineer. She later became a producer and music director. In 1976, she started her own company, Judith Sherman Productions. She has worked there as a freelance recording engineer and producer ever since.
Judith also worked at the Marlboro Music School and Festival in Vermont. She was the summer recording engineer from 1976 to 1994. She also taught audio at the Banff Centre in 2006 and 2008. She has been on the board of directors for Chamber Music America.
Judith Sherman's Personal Life
Judith Sherman is married to violinist Curtis Macomber.
After her mother passed away, Judith asked composer George Perle to write a special piece of music. This piece, called Triptych for Violin & Piano, was created in her mother's memory. It was first performed on January 27, 2003, in New York City.
Awards and Recognition
In 2009, Judith Sherman received the Richard J. Bogomolny National Service Award. This award was given to her by Chamber Music America.
