Jules Léotard (1 August 1838 – 17 August 1870) was a famous French acrobat and aerialist. He is known for inventing the exciting art of the trapeze. He also created and made popular the special one-piece gym outfit that is now called a leotard. His amazing performances even inspired the famous 1867 song "The Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze."

Early Life and Training
Jules Léotard was born in Toulouse, a city in France. His father was a gymnastics teacher who owned a swimming pool. Young Jules would practice his acrobatic moves right over the pool. This was a safe way to try new tricks!
Even though he loved acrobatics, Jules also studied law. It seemed like he might become a lawyer.
Becoming a Trapeze Star
After finishing his law exams, Jules decided to follow his passion for acrobatics. When he was 18, he started trying out new ideas with trapeze bars, ropes, and rings. He hung them over a swimming pool, just like when he was a kid.
Jules Léotard later joined a famous circus called the Cirque Napoléon. On November 12, 1859, he performed the very first "flying trapeze" act. He used three trapeze bars at the Cirque Napoléon. This was a huge moment in circus history!
The Famous Leotard
Jules Léotard also designed a special costume for his performances. It was a one-piece, close-fitting outfit made of knitted fabric. This design was perfect for trapeze artists because it allowed them to move freely and safely. It also showed off his strong body, which impressed the audience. This special outfit became so popular that it was named after him: the leotard!
His incredible acts made him very famous. In 1867, a song called The Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze was written about him. This song was made popular by a singer named George Leybourne.
Later Life and Legacy
Jules Léotard was also one of the first people to ride bicycles in France. He was always trying new and exciting things.
Sadly, Jules Léotard passed away in 1870. He was only 32 years old. He died from an infectious disease, possibly smallpox. Even though he died young, Jules Léotard left a lasting mark on the world of acrobatics and fashion.
