Julia Crawford Ivers (born October 3, 1869 – died May 8, 1930) was an important American pioneer in making movies. She was one of the first people to work as a director, producer, and writer in the early days of film.
Early Life and Film Career
Julia Crawford Ivers was born in Boonville, Missouri, in 1869. Her family moved to Los Angeles, California, a year later. Her father was a dentist. Julia's mother passed away in 1876 when Julia was seven years old. Her sister, Grace, also died young at age 14.
Julia saw the very beginning of the film industry in southern California. She became a big part of this new industry. She worked as a writer, a producer, and a director. This means she helped create the stories, managed the making of the films, and guided the actors and crew.
Family and Connections
Julia was married to Franklin S. Van Trees. He was a famous architect known for designing large houses in San Francisco. They had a son named James Van Trees. James grew up to be a popular cinematographer for big studios like Paramount Pictures and Warner Bros. A cinematographer is the person who is in charge of the camera and lighting for a film. James even filmed some of his mother's movies!
Julia later worked closely with director William Desmond Taylor. She was also married to Oliver Ivers, who passed away in 1902.
Later Years and Passing
Julia Crawford Ivers passed away in Los Angeles in 1930. She was 60 years old.
