Julia Catherine Crick was born in 1963. She is a British historian and a university professor. She studies the Middle Ages and old handwritten documents. She is a Professor of Palaeography and Manuscript Studies at King's College London. This means she teaches about and studies ancient writing and old books written by hand.

Studying and Teaching

Julia Crick went to Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge University. In 1984, she finished her studies in a subject called Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic. This course teaches about the history, languages, and cultures of early England, Scandinavia, and Ireland.

She started her career at Gonville and Caius College as a tutor and a Fellow. A tutor helps students with their studies, and a Fellow is a senior member of a college.

In 1992, Julia Crick moved to the University of Exeter. There, she became a lecturer in history. She taught university students. Over time, she was promoted to senior lecturer and then to associate professor. She still has a special connection with the University of Exeter as an honorary fellow.

In 2012, Julia Crick joined King's College London. Here, she became a full Professor of Palaeography and Manuscript Studies. From 2013 to 2017, she was also in charge of the Centre for Late Antique and Medieval Studies. This center focuses on studying history from the end of the Roman Empire through the Middle Ages.

What Julia Crick Studies

Julia Crick is an expert in several areas:

  • Medieval Palaeography: This is the study of old handwriting, especially from the Middle Ages. She learns about how people wrote, what tools they used, and how writing changed over time.

In 2019, Julia Crick was chosen as a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London (FSA). This is a special honor for people who are experts in old buildings, objects, and history. In 2021, she became a Fellow of the British Academy. This is a very high honor for experts in the humanities and social sciences.
