About Julia Lee

Her Early Life and Music

Julia Lee was born in Boonville, Missouri. She grew up in Kansas City. Around 1920, she started her music career. She sang and played the piano in her brother George Lee's band. Famous jazz musician Charlie Parker also played with them for a while.

Julia made her first recordings in 1927. She worked with Jesse Stone, who played piano and helped arrange the music. In 1935, Julia decided to start her own solo career.

Becoming a Star

In 1944, Julia Lee signed a contract with Capitol Records. This led to many popular R&B songs. Some of her big hits included "Gotta Gimme Whatcha Got" in 1946. Her song "Snatch and Grab It" was a number one R&B hit for 12 weeks in 1947. It sold over 500,000 copies!

Another popular song was "King Size Papa", which was number one for nine weeks in 1948. She also had hits like "I Didn't Like It The First Time (The Spinach Song)" and "My Man Stands Out."

Julia Lee became well-known for her clever songs. These songs often had "double meanings." She once said they were "the songs my mother taught me not to sing." Her records were usually credited to 'Julia Lee and Her Boy Friends'. Her band included famous musicians like Jay McShann, Vic Dickenson, and Benny Carter.

Her Life and Legacy

Julia Lee was married to Frank Duncan. He was a star catcher and manager for the Negro National League's Kansas City Monarchs. Frank was also from Kansas City.

After 1949, her songs were not as popular on the charts. However, Julia remained one of the most loved performers in Kansas City. She continued to perform until she passed away. Julia Lee died in Kansas City at age 56 from a heart attack.
