Starting in Film
Julie Gavras began her career in filmmaking as an assistant director. This means she helped the main director on movie sets. She worked on commercials, TV shows, and feature films in both Italy and France.
She learned a lot by working with many different directors. She even worked with her famous father, Costa-Gavras, on his 2002 movie Amen.. This film was a drama set during World War II.
Directing Her Own Films
In 1998, Julie Gavras directed a short film called Oh les beaux dimanches!. It was made in Marseille. Two years later, she directed her first documentary, From Dawn to Night: Songs by Moroccan Women. This film was based on a play and was shown on the TV channel Arte.
In 2002, her second documentary film was shown in theaters in France. It was called The Pirate, the Wizard, the Thief and the Children. This movie followed a class of nine-year-olds as they made a film at school.
Feature Films
Julie Gavras directed her first full-length movie, Blame It on Fidel, in 2006. It was shown for the first time at the Deauville American Film Festival.
