Julie Plec, born on May 26, 1972, is a talented American producer, writer, and director for television. She is well-known for her work on the TV series The Vampire Diaries, which aired from 2009 to 2017. She helped create this popular show with Kevin Williamson. Julie Plec also created its spin-off shows, The Originals (2013–2018) and Legacies (2018–2022). She also developed the short series Containment in 2016.

Early Life and Education
Julie Plec studied at Northwestern University, graduating in 1994. She first planned to study film. However, she changed her major halfway through her studies. She ended up graduating with a special interdepartmental degree.
Becoming a TV Creator
Early Work in Film
Julie Plec started her career working on movies. She was a co-producer and assistant to director Wes Craven for the films Scream 2 and Scream 3. These were popular horror movies. She also worked on another film for Craven called Cursed, which came out in 2005.
Working on Kyle XY
From 2006 to 2009, Julie Plec was a producer and writer for the TV show Kyle XY. This show was about a teenage boy who wakes up with no memory and no belly button. It was a science fiction mystery series.
Creating The Vampire Diaries
Julie Plec helped create a new TV series for The CW called The Vampire Diaries. This show was based on a book series by L. J. Smith. The story follows a girl named Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) who falls in love with a vampire, Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley). She soon finds herself in a love triangle with Stefan and his older brother, Damon (Ian Somerhalder). The show also explores the lives of Elena's friends in the fictional town of Mystic Falls, Virginia. The Vampire Diaries first aired on September 10, 2009. It quickly became a big hit both in the United States and around the world.
Expanding the Vampire Universe
In 2013, a special episode of The Vampire Diaries was aired. This episode was a "back-door pilot" for a new show called The Originals. It focused on the very first family of vampires. The CW network decided to turn it into a full series, which started airing in the 2013–14 TV season. Joseph Morgan returned to play his role as Klaus. Other actors from The Vampire Diaries, like Daniel Gillies, Claire Holt, and Phoebe Tonkin, also joined the new show. Julie Plec was the main creator behind The Originals.
Julie Plec also helped develop The Tomorrow People for The CW. This show was about young people with special powers. It aired during the 2013–14 season.
More Recent Projects
Julie Plec continued to create and produce many other shows. She developed Containment in 2016, a limited series about a mysterious epidemic. From 2018 to 2022, she created Legacies, which was another spin-off from The Vampire Diaries universe. She also worked as an executive producer on Roswell, New Mexico from 2019 to 2021. In 2022, she developed Vampire Academy for the Peacock streaming service. More recently, she developed The Girls on the Bus for Max in 2023 and We Were Liars for Amazon Prime Video, which is set to air in 2025.
