Early Life and Education
Julien's mother is from the Castile region of Spain, and his father is French. His family had a history of working with clothing and materials. One set of his grandparents were tanners, who work with leather. His other grandmother was a seamstress who made corsets and lingerie. From the time he was three years old, Julien loved to draw.
At first, Fournié studied medicine and earned a degree in Biology. But after two years, he decided to follow his passion for fashion. He went to a famous fashion school in Paris called the Ecole de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne. He graduated in 2000 and won an award for the best accessories he designed.
A Career in High Fashion
While studying, Fournié worked at several famous fashion houses to gain experience. He worked at Nina Ricci, Christian Dior, and Givenchy.
Learning from the Best
After his studies, Fournié was about to start a job at Céline when the famous designer Jean-Paul Gaultier hired him. As an assistant designer, Fournié helped find materials and design details for a collection. He even got to help create stage costumes for a tour by the singer Madonna.
At the end of 2001, he joined the designer Claude Montana. There, he designed collections of bags, scarves, and jewelry.
Becoming a Head Designer
In 2003, when he was 28, Fournié became the Style Director for the brand Torrente. Soon after, he was promoted to creative director, putting him in charge of all the designs. He later worked as an advisor for brands in Asia, especially in South Korea.
In 2008, he became the Creative Director for another French company, Ramosport. When that company was sold later that year, Fournié decided it was the perfect time to start his own brand under his own name.
The Julien Fournié Brand
In 2010, Fournié won a major award from the City of Paris for one of his hand-painted dresses.
Making a Statement on the Runway
Fournié is known for his memorable fashion shows.
- First Colors: In January 2011, he was invited to show his collection during Paris Fashion Week. For his show, called "First Colors," he hired only black models, which was a major statement in the fashion world.
- A Pregnant Model: For his Spring/Summer 2013 show, he featured a very pregnant model. She walked the runway in a tight dress, holding her high-heeled shoes.
- Runway Falls: Sometimes, the unique designs and very high heels in his shows have led to models falling. This happened during shows in Singapore in 2012 and again in Paris in 2013 and 2014. These moments showed how challenging high-fashion clothing can be to wear.
Earning the Haute Couture Title
In January 2011, the group that governs the French fashion industry gave Fournié "guest member" status. This allowed him to officially show his collections during Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week.
In January 2017, he earned the official title of a Haute Couture label. This is a special, protected status in France. Only a small number of fashion houses in the world have this title, which recognizes the highest level of art and skill in fashion design.
