Juliette Adam (born Lambert; 4 October 1836 – 23 August 1936) was a French writer and a strong supporter of women's rights. She lived for almost a hundred years!

Early Life and Career

Juliette Adam was born in a town called Verberie, in France. Her childhood was not easy because her parents often disagreed. She wrote about this in a book called Le roman de mon enfance et de ma jeunesse. Her father was a doctor who believed in equal rights for women. He even wrote a book about his ideas.

In 1852, when she was 16, Juliette married a doctor named La Messine. In 1858, she published her first book. It was called Idées antiproudhoniennes sur l’amour, la femme et le mariage. In this book, she defended the ideas of other women writers like Marie d'Agoult and George Sand. She spoke up for women's thoughts on love and marriage.

After her first husband passed away in 1867, Juliette married Antoine Edmond Adam. He was an important public official. He became the police chief in 1870 and later a senator for life.

A Gathering Place for Ideas

Juliette Adam started a famous "salon" in her home. A salon was a special gathering where important people met to talk about politics, art, and new ideas. Many leaders of the French Republic, like Léon Gambetta, visited her salon. They discussed how to make France a better place after a time of conservative rule.

In 1879, she started a magazine called Nouvelle Revue (New Review). She was the editor for eight years. She also had a say in how the magazine was run until 1899. She published stories and articles by many famous writers of her time. These included Paul Bourget, Pierre Loti, and Guy de Maupassant.

Juliette Adam also joined a group called Avant-Courrière (Forerunner) in 1893. This group worked for women's rights. They wanted women to be able to be witnesses in official documents. They also wanted married women to be able to keep and use the money they earned from their work.

Her Writings and Later Years

Juliette Adam wrote many articles about foreign politics. She often criticized Otto von Bismarck, a powerful German leader. She also supported a policy called "Revanchism," which meant France wanted to get back lands it had lost.

She wrote many novels. Her most famous novel was Païenne (1883). She also wrote books about her memories, like Mes premières armes littéraires et politiques (1904). These books shared interesting stories about the famous people she knew.

In 1882, she bought a large estate in Gif-sur-Yvette. She lived there from 1904 until she passed away in Callian in 1936. She lived to be almost 100 years old!
