Club Career Highlights
Julio Alberto was born in Candás, Asturias, Spain. He started his football journey in the youth teams of Atlético Madrid. In his early years, he didn't play much for the main team. He also spent some time on loan at Recreativo de Huelva in the Segunda División, which is Spain's second-highest football league.
Playing for Atlético Madrid
After his loan, Julio Alberto became a regular player for Atlético Madrid. He played in 58 La Liga games over two seasons. His strong performances caught the eye of FC Barcelona, one of Spain's biggest clubs.
Success with Barcelona
Julio Alberto joined Barcelona and played there for nine years. He became a very important player for the team. In the 1985 season, he helped Barcelona win the league championship.
The next season, 1985–86, he scored an amazing goal against Juventus FC in the semi-finals of the European Cup. Barcelona won that home game 1–0, and eventually won the overall match 2–1. However, Barcelona lost the final of the European Cup to FC Steaua București in a penalty shootout. Julio Alberto was one of the players who started in that final.
Towards the end of his career, from 1988 to 1991, Julio Alberto played fewer matches. This was when Barcelona's famous "Dream Team" was starting to form. He retired after playing only three games in his final season, 1990–91, when Barcelona won the national championship again.
International Football
Julio Alberto played 34 matches for the Spanish national team over four years. These appearances are called "caps." He was part of the Spanish squad for UEFA Euro 1984 and the 1986 FIFA World Cup.
His first game for Spain was on 29 February 1984. It was a friendly match against Luxembourg before Euro 1984. Spain won that game 1–0. Julio Alberto played in all the games for Spain in Euro 1984, where they finished as runners-up.
