Juliusz Paetz (born February 2, 1935 – died November 15, 2019) was a Polish bishop in the Catholic Church. He was the Bishop of Łomża from 1982 to 1996. After that, he served as the Archbishop of Poznań from 1996 to 2002.
Early Life and Priesthood
Juliusz Paetz was born in Poznań, Poland, on February 2, 1935. He became a priest on June 28, 1959, in Poznań Cathedral. This was an important step in his journey with the Church.
After becoming a priest, he worked in different parishes in Ostrow Wielkopolski and Poznań. These are like local church communities. From 1967 to 1982, he lived in Italy. During this time, he worked for the Synod of Bishops. This group helps the Pope with important decisions. In 1976, he was given a special title: prelate of the Pope's anteroom. This meant he worked closely with the Popes. He helped Popes Paul VI, John Paul I, and John Paul II. In 1981, he received an award from Portugal called the Commander's Cross of the Order of Merit.
Becoming a Bishop
On December 20, 1982, Juliusz Paetz was chosen to be the Bishop of Łomża. He officially became a bishop on January 6, 1983. This special ceremony took place in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. Pope John Paul II himself led the ceremony. On March 13, 1983, he took charge of his new diocese in Łomża.
Later, on April 11, 1996, he was appointed to a higher position. He became the Archbishop of Poznań.
