Juniper Springs (also known as Juniper) was once a small mining camp in Nye County, Nevada. It was a place where people lived and worked for a short time in 1910. A mining camp is like a temporary town that pops up when valuable minerals are found nearby.

What Was Juniper Springs?

Juniper Springs was a place where people hoped to find valuable rocks and minerals. It was located in the desert state of Nevada. The camp existed for only a very short time. It was a busy place for a few months before it joined with another nearby camp.

How Juniper Springs Started

Juniper Springs began in the summer of 1910. A man named N. E. Dyer found valuable ore there. Ore is rock that contains important metals like gold or silver. Because of this discovery, a new mining camp quickly formed.

Juniper Springs was very close to another mining camp called Athens. These two camps were rivals, meaning they were competing with each other. N. E. Dyer owned Juniper Springs. He offered free land plots to people who wanted to build homes or businesses there. This was different from Athens, where people had to pay money for their land.

The first businesses to open in Juniper Springs were the Juniper Lodging House. This was a place where people could stay. There was also a store owned by Guy Eckley.

Joining Forces

On July 9, 1910, something important happened. More than fifty people from both Juniper Springs and Athens met. They decided to create the Athens Mining District. This district included both camps.

Later in 1910, Juniper Springs and Athens decided to combine. They became one larger mining camp. The new, combined camp was given the name Athens. People continued to live in Athens until 1939.
