Jurandir de Freitas (born November 12, 1940 – died March 6, 1996) was a famous Brazilian footballer. People often called him by his nickname, Jurandir. He was known for playing as a centre back. This position is like a strong protector in the middle of the defense.

Jurandir played for the Brazil national football team 15 times. He was part of the amazing team that won the 1962 FIFA World Cup. Even though he was on the winning team, he did not play in any matches during that big tournament. Throughout his career, he played for several different clubs in Brazil. These included Corinthians, São Bento, and São Paulo. He also played for Marília, Operário-MT, Amparo-SP, and União de Mogi.

Playing for Clubs

Jurandir started his football journey in 1959 with Corinthians. He played there for one year. After that, he moved to São Bento for two seasons, from 1960 to 1961.

Time at São Paulo FC

His longest and most important club career was with São Paulo. He joined them in 1962 and stayed for ten years until 1972. During his time at São Paulo, he played in 418 games. This shows how important he was to the team. Even though he was a defender, he focused on stopping goals rather than scoring them. He did not score any goals for São Paulo.

Later Club Career

After leaving São Paulo in 1972, Jurandir played for a few more clubs. He played for Marília in 1972. Then, from 1973 to 1974, he played for Operário. He also had spells with Amparo and União de Mogi before ending his playing career.

International Career

Jurandir's biggest achievement was being part of the Brazil national football team. He represented his country in 15 matches.

1962 FIFA World Cup Win

In 1962, Jurandir was selected for the 1962 FIFA World Cup squad. This tournament was held in Chile. Brazil had a very strong team that year. They went on to win the World Cup, making them champions for the second time in a row. Even though Jurandir did not get to play in any of the matches, being part of a World Cup-winning team is a huge honor for any footballer. It means he was considered one of the best players in Brazil at that time.

Life After Football

Jurandir passed away on March 6, 1996, when he was 55 years old. He is remembered as a strong defender and a World Cup winner. His contribution to Brazilian football, especially his long career at São Paulo FC, is still recognized.
