Jurjen Jacob Koolhof, known as Jurrie Koolhof, was a famous Dutch football striker and later a manager. He was born on January 10, 1960, and passed away on January 28, 2019.

Jurrie had a long and successful career as a player. He scored 190 goals in league matches. He played for several clubs in the Netherlands. Some of these clubs include Vitesse Arnhem, FC Groningen, De Graafschap, and PSV Eindhoven. At PSV Eindhoven, he scored 69 goals in 106 games. He was a great team player, especially with Norway's Hallvar Thoresen in the 1980s.

Playing for Clubs

Starting His Football Journey

Jurrie Koolhof started his football career at his local club, BV Veendam, in 1978. He quickly became known for scoring many goals. This made other bigger clubs notice him.

Moving to Vitesse and PSV

In 1980, he moved to Vitesse Arnhem. That same year, Vitesse moved down from the top Dutch league, the Eredivisie, to the second league, the Eerste Divisie. In his second season with Vitesse, he scored an amazing 19 goals in just 16 games. This means he scored more than one goal per match!

Because of his great performance, he signed a contract with PSV Eindhoven in 1981. This was his first time playing for an Eredivisie club.

Facing Challenges and Coming Back

Jurrie did very well in his first years at PSV. He quickly got used to playing at the highest level. He played in almost every match for two and a half years.

However, in 1984, he got a serious injury. This injury kept him from playing for two whole years. He returned to the field in the 1986-1987 season. Even though he played for seven more years, mostly in the second division, he never fully recovered from that injury. He played for FC Groningen, Vitesse Arnhem, and De Graafschap. He finished his playing career back where he started, with BV Veendam.

Playing for the National Team

Representing the Netherlands

Jurrie Koolhof also had the chance to play for the Dutch national team. His first game was on August 14, 1982, against Greece. He came into the game after 46 minutes. The score was 0-0 at that time. Later, his teammate Edo Ophof scored, and the Netherlands won the game.

A Short International Career

He played for his country only 5 times and did not score any goals. Because of this, his international career was not very long. His last international match was on February 16, 1983. This was a game against Spain for the Euro 1984 qualifiers. The Netherlands lost that game 1-0.

Becoming a Coach

Starting as a Youth Coach

After he stopped playing, Jurrie Koolhof moved to Doetinchem. From 1994 to 2002, he worked at De Graafschap. He was either in charge of the youth academy or the manager of the team.

Coaching Different Clubs

He also worked as an assistant manager for one season at FC Emmen. In the years that followed, he became the manager for several other clubs. These included AGOVV Apeldoorn, FC Dordrecht, and MVV Maastricht.

On February 19, 2007, Koolhof was let go from his job at MVV because of disappointing results. Soon after, on March 15, he signed a two-year contract with SC Cambuur-Leeuwarden. He started this new role on July 1, 2007.

In his first year at Cambuur, his team surprised everyone. They beat AZ Alkmaar 1-0 in a cup match. However, after a few games in the 2008-2009 season, Koolhof was fired again. This was because the team had a poor start to the season.

Family Life

Jurrie Koolhof was married and had two sons. Both of his sons also became successful in sports. His son Dean Koolhof became a football player, just like his dad. His other son, Wesley Koolhof, became a professional tennis player.

Jurrie Koolhof passed away at the age of 59 after a long illness.
